Essential oils

If you have ever enjoyed the scent of a rose, you’ve experienced the aromatic qualities of essential oils. These naturally occurring, volatile aromatic compounds are found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers, and other parts of plants. Essential oils give plants their distinctive smells, essential oils protect plants and play a role in plant pollination. So you can say that essential oils is the plants immuns system and also full potential. In addition to their intrinsic benefits to plants and their beautiful fragrance, essential oils have long been used for food preparation, beauty treatment, and health-care practices. 

How to use them

A single drop of doTERRA essential oils is wonderfully potent and therefore goes a long way. Find your unique best way of applying, inhaling and taking in your favorite oils. 

We use the oils to effectively support our immune systems, manage or balance moods, in self care; mental, emotional and physical. The key with oils is to use less oil, more often, rather than a lot of oils once or twice a day.

There are three ways to use your oils: Topically, Aromatically and Internally:

This is the most effective of all ways to use your oils - inhaling them! You can either take the cap off and breathe in, or place a drop in between your hands, rub them together and inhale deeply. When you smell an essential oil it directly interacts with the smell receptors in your brain which talk to the limbic system. The limbic system is a powerhouse as it effects our moods, emotions and memories.

Another way is to diffuse them. We love diffusing essential oils to help keep our homes and my bodies balanced. Some oils can be very stimulating, while others can be calming and soothing. Diffusing essential oils can also purify the air of unwanted odors and some airborne pathogens.

Essential oils easily penetrate the skin and enter the bloodstream (like less than 60 seconds) so when we apply our oils topically we can dial in on a specific area very easily and efficiently. It is highly recommended to use a carrier oil like fractionated coconut oil to apply your essential oil topically. Using a carrier oil helps with skin sensitivity and also allows the essential oil to impact a larger surface area on the body!

Some common areas to apply essential oils topically are:

  • Your feet are always a great location to apply the oils. Your body knows how to direct the oils to go to where they are best needed. The oils are within your blood stream within seconds, and can affect your whole body within 20 minutes.

  • Chest and abdomen

  • Temples and back of the neck

  • Pulse points

We recommend the following dilution ratio:

Be aware of the ‘hot oils’ (Oregano, On Guard, Cinnamon, Cassia) that may sting or burn, so be careful where you apply. Always patch test any new oils on your wrist. Keep them away from your eyes, ears or pits and bits ;) If you get oil in your eyes, or on your skin just rub extra fractionated coconut oil around or over the area.

Citrus oils are photosensitive, so take care applying them before spending time in the sun as sunburn is more likely.

Many doTERRA oils can be used internally, please read the label or consult the Modern Essentials app, as some oils are unsuitable for ingestion.

Some common ways to use essential oils internally:

  • Place 1-2 drops in your water (Grapefruit, Lemon, Lime)

  • Place 1 drop under your tongue (Frankincense, Copiaba)

  • Gargling (Peppermint or On Guard)

  • Swallow in a veggie capsule, add a few drops of essential oil to a veggie cap and add a little olive oil.

  • Cook with them, just a drop or two will be plenty

We suggest taking the oils with food, and particularly, good fats. One or two drops is more than enough in a big class of water, so use sparingly.
